Nitehawks Headed for Cross-Country Nationals

November 19, 2005

“Run your hearts out!” were the final words Nitehawks coach Alex Ivanov said to his team as they lined up at the start of the New England Cross Country Championships last Saturday.  His Bantam boys team, ages 8-10, stood shoulder to shoulder with about 100 boys waiting to charge the 3K (1.9m) course at Bryant University in Smithfield, RI.  When the starting gun fired, the boys surged across a soccer field, threaded around campus buildings, up and down some challenging terrain, and then headed for the finishing shoot in the football stadium.

Anxious parents, family members and friends cheered as each boy entered the final stretch, as each place would help determine whether the team would qualify for the Nationals.  First to finish for the Nitehawks was Lunenburg resident, Max LaChance, placing 6th overall.  Max was closely followed by teammate Scott Brazina of Carlisle, finishing in 8th place.   In rapid succession behind Scott came Eli Bucher of Wayland, Sam Rater of Cambridge, Arthur Whitehead of Concord, Randy Clark of Carlisle, Anthony Aguirre of Lexington, and Matt Fischetti of Groton.

When the final team scores were tallied, the Nitehawks secured third place, qualifying them for the National Cross Country Championships.  The Nationals will be held on December 10, again at Bryant University giving the boys a “homefield advantage.”  They had run their hearts out – and can’t wait to do it again!
