Nitehawks Capture Mayor's Cup

October 22, 2006

The Nitehawks Sports Club traveled to Franklin Park in Boston on Sunday morning for the 17th Annual Mayor’s Cup cross country race.  The youth race is a 1.1 mile run. 

With the club’s top three runners finishing first, second and fifth, they dominated the field and finished 42 points ahead of the second place team. 

John Ellersick and Alec Barnes, both of Sudbury, finished first and second at 5:49 and 5:55.  Brett Baker of Wayland, the top 13 year old in the field, ran a strong race and came in fifth over all with a time of 5:58.  Rounding out the scoring for the Nitehawks were Martin Falk (6:33) in 22nd and Matthew Barnes in 24th (6:37), both of Sudbury. 

The other Nitehawks were Stephen Pawlek (6:53) of Stow in 37th, Matt Fischetti (7:04) of Groton in 45th, Scott Brazina (7:06) of Carlisle in 47th, Arthur Whitehead (7:11) of Concord in 52nd, Eli Bucher (7:11) of Wayland in 53rd, Alex Groher (7:57) in 85th of Acton, Brian Dolan (7:59) of Lowell in 87th,  Peter Kirk (8:15) of Ashland 101st and Thomas Kirk (8:28) of Ashland 108th.  

Head coach Alex Ivanov remarked after the race, “I am very pleased with the team effort today.”  He went on to say, “we had some standout performances from our older kids and the solid effort of our younger runners showed a lot of promise for the years ahead.”

The girls’ team put in a solid effort and finished in fifth place.  Leading the way for the Nitehawks girls’ team were Samantha Moore and Kelsi Moore of Lowell.  Samantha finished in 15th place with a time of 7:10 and Kelsi crossed the line in 23rd place with a time of 7:13.  The other finishers for the Nitehawks were Erin Donovan (7:23) of Lowell in 32nd, Julianne Ramirez (7:43) of Lowell in 59th, Katia Wyman (7:50) of Lowell in 61st, Shannon Wright (7:51) of Lowell in 62nd and Cara Fischetti (10:53) of Groton in 123rd.

Eric Bucher, assistant coach of the Nitehawks, said “It’s great to see so many new girls on the team.  This gives us a good base to build upon.” 

Assistant coach Joe Fischetti added, “With this performance we a lot of momentum going into the Junior Olympics meets.  People are taking notice of the Nitehawks now!”

The Nitehawks Sports Club provides a year-round program of cross-country and track for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 18.  The practice and meet schedule is flexible and always open to new members.  For more information on the club you can visit the team website at www.thenitehawks.org.
