Nitehawks Fly South for AAU Nationals

November 5, 2006 -- Cambridge, MA

The Nitehawks, fresh off their victory in the Mayor’s Cup Race at Franklin Park (Oct 22nd), ran to two meet records, two New England District Champions, and a flock of ten athletes qualifying for the AAU Junior Olympic Nationals at Disney’s World of Sports Center in Orlando, Florida.

Brett Baker of Wayland led from start to finish in the boys Sub-Youth Division race on the hilly Fresh Pond course.  He ran away from one of the largest fields of the day to set a course / meet record and take home the gold medal.  In the Bantam Boys Division, Max LaChance of Lunenburg also led wire-to-wire to set a course record and win the gold.  He was followed by two other Nitehawks who qualified for the nationals in that race: Matthew Fischetti of Groton who placed 5th and Elijah Bucher of Wayland who bounced back after going down hard early in the race to place 10th overall.

In the Boys Sub-Midget Division, Arthur Whitehead battled through a tough pack to take the bronze medal and a national berth.  He will be joined by Peter Kirk of Ashland who finished 14th to qualify for nationals.

In the Sub-Bantam divisions the Nitehawks earned four more national spots.  On the girl’s side, Olivia Dunsmoor of Groton finished 7th while the three boy’s runners ran 6th (Anthony Aguirre of Lexington), 8th (Thomas Kirk of Ashland), and 10th (Lucas Aguirre of Lexington) to round out the Nitehawks’ national qualifiers.

The Nitehawks will now fly south to compete in the Nationals on December 2nd in Orlando.  “We’re all really pleased with the performances today,” nodded Coach Eric Bucher.  “We’ve been working hard this fall and it’s nice to see the training pay off for the kids.”
